Dr. Larry Mayo was a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology for 34 years before his retirement in July of 2022. He joined DePaul's Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1988.  Larry was instrumental in creating the Anthropology Program in 1997 and was a founder of the Department of Anthropology in 2000.  He served as the Director of Anthropology Program and then twice as Chair of the Department of Anthropology; he also served as Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences from 1993 to 1997.  Drawing on his dissertation research on the Pacific Island of Guam, Larry published a number of articles and book chapters on Chamorro ethnic identity, urbanization in the Pacific, and the possibility of economic self-sufficiency in the region.  This work also informed several of the courses he developed at DePaul, notably the popular “Cultures of the Pacific." The faculty of the department were delighted to recognize his commitment, kindness, and dedication as a colleague with emeritus status.
