Scholarships

​The Geography Department offers several competitive scholarships to eligible Geography majors. Interested students should apply on the DePaul Online Scholarship Application website.

The Betty Leahy Memorial Academic Scholarship is a tuition scholarship awarded for the spring quarter to a Geography major in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences who is in good academic standing and has proven financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The award for the Betty Leahy Academic Scholarship is $3000.

To qualify for the Betty Leahy Academic Scholarship, students must:

  • Be a declared Geography major at DePaul University;
  • Be in their Junior or Senior year at DePaul University;
  • Be in good academic standing, both with the Department of Geography and at DePaul University;
  • Receive a ‘C-’ or better in all Geography courses taken at DePaul University;
  • Be a full-time DePaul University student at the time of award;
  • Be enrolled in courses at DePaul University at the time of award.

For fifty-one years, between 1961 and 2012, the DePaul Geographical Society held monthly lectures and events on DePaul’s campus for current students and alumni. Upon its cessation of activities, the Society endowed a Scholarship to encourage the exploration of Geography by a DePaul undergraduate student.

Consideration will be given to whether the applicant is a member of a historically underrepresented group in Geography or whether the individual has demonstrated an interest in/commitment to increasing the prevalence of, or improving the role of, underrepresented groups in Geography. Recipients of the DGSS will receive a tuition credit, payable for the Spring Quarter following the Fall application. The award for the DePaul Geographical Society Scholarship is $3000.

To qualify for the DePaul Geographical Society Scholarship, students must:

  • Be a declared Geography major at DePaul University;
  • Be in their Junior or Senior year at DePaul University;
  • Be in good academic standing, both with the Department of Geography and at DePaul University;
  • Receive a ‘C-’ or better in all Geography courses taken at DePaul University;
  • Be a full-time DePaul University student at the time of award.

The Betty Leahy Memorial Travel Scholarship sends Junior and/or Senior Geography majors to the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers. The award covers the cost of travel, hotel, and conference registration. The scholarship is awarded to the Junior and Senior Geography majors with the highest GPA at the end of the Fall Quarter preceeding the Spring AAG Meeting. There is no application for this scholarship. Awardees are selected by the full-time Geography faculty and will be notified by email of their selection.

To qualify for the Betty Leahy Travel Scholarship:

  • Students will be nominated by a faculty sponsor
  • Award will be based on departmental service and academic excellence;
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5;
  • Must be a junior of senior;
  • Must be a current student during the conference dates.

** No more than 9 hours of Geography transfer credit will be considered.

Previous recipients of the Leahy Travel Scholarship are ineligible and will not be considered for a second award.

The purpose of the Judith Regnier Getch Endowed Scholarship is to provide recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences majoring in Geography who are in good academic standing and have financial need. The Scholarship award is $2250.

The Scholarship Application Period will begin October 15th.

The deadline for submitting your application is November 15th.

How to apply for Department of Geography scholarships:

  1. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and have the results sent to DePaul University. (This is only required for need-based scholarships.)
  2. Complete the General Application on the DePaul Online Scholarship Application website.
    1. Log into the DePaul Online Scholarship Application using your Campus Connect ID and password.
    2. Complete and submit the General Application.
      1. Your General Application will be marked with a green checkmark to indicate that it has been completed and submitted successfully.
      2. If it is gray, the application was not submitted successfully; try again.
  3. After submitting the General Application, you will automatically be routed to opportunities for which you qualify. If you are recommended for additional scholarships, you will be able to view a list of opportunities. Apply for them by clicking on the blue “Apply” button beside each scholarship. Additional questions or information may be required to complete the application process.

After Submitting an Application

If awarded a scholarship, you will be notified via email and you will see a notification on the “Applications” tab of the scholarship application site under “Active”. You will also receive a communication from financial aid stating that your financial aid award letter has been updated. If you are not selected for a scholarship, you will see a notification on the Home tab of the website indicating your application was reviewed and not selected.
