COLLEGE OF Liberal Arts and Sciences

Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences provides courses for biology majors, science majors, and non-majors from all areas - anyone interested in understanding more about the wonders of living systems. We have more than 600 majors in our undergraduate program leading to a Bachelors of Science. We also have a graduate program leading to a Master of Arts or Master of Science.

Our standard concentration includes a year of introductory biology followed by a core course in genetics followed by specialty courses in areas such as ecology/evolution, physiology, cell biology and microbiology. Beyond the core program we offer a substantial number of elective courses in a broad range of areas to help students focus in their area of interest, and to provide all of the needed prerequisites for those planning for more advanced professional schools. The department offers six concentrations that allow the student to focus more directly in some of the electives that provide exposure to the areas and specialties that most interest them. We also provide numerous learning opportunities outside the classroom including field experiences, opportunities for laboratory research, journal clubs, student organizations and research seminars
