Biological Science

About

The Department of Biological Sciences provides courses for biology majors and graduate students, other science majors and non-majors interested in understanding the wonders of living processes. Majors take a year of introductory biology, along with a course in genetics and courses in their area of interests such as physiology, ecology, evolution, and cell biology. After the completion of core courses, we offer a large number of advanced elective courses that permit specialization in a wide range of areas. Electives courses are offered in areas such as ecological or evolutionary biology, developmental biology, molecular and cellular biology, as well as biomedically related electives such as cancer biology, immunology, microbiology, neurobiology, histology and anatomy. We currently offer six concentrations within Biology to provide a range of both flexibility and specialization.  Our department is committed to providing numerous learning opportunities outside the classroom as well, including laboratory and library research projects, student organizations and seminars. Our faculty are active scholars in their field, and direct research labs that involve undergraduates and graduate students.

The Biological Sciences program is housed in the William G. McGowan Biological and Environmental Sciences Building which provides modern teaching labs and research facilities, including tissue culture facilities, environmental chambers, a DNA sequencing facilities, a darkroom and a greenhouse. The building also includes a student study lounge and an open atrium area where students can study, relax, or work on group projects.

We are extremely excited that our science building complex has now been enhanced by the addition of the adjacent Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Science Building.  Our connected science complex now houses together the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences. The new building thus provides the opportunities for those interdisciplinary interactions so important to developing and maintaining a vibrant community of science students and faculty.
