Come explore and experience Mr. Burnham’s neighborhood with your DePaul community.  Learn about Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett's groundbreaking Plan of Chicago, attend a world-class concert, explore Chicago on our Family Day bus tour and more! Spend this historic summer in Mr. Burnham's neighborhood. It is DePaul's neighborhood too.

  • A Night at the Symphony

Join the DePaul community for a reception at the DePaul Center to mark the beginning of our festival, followed by a stroll to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park to enjoy the feature presentation of “Planning,”  a piece specially commissioned by the Grant Park Orchestral Association to celebrate the 1909 Plan of Chicago Centennial. Reception is in the DePaul Center, lower concourse (1 East Jackson Blvd.). Performance begins at 6:30pm. Cash bar available at reception. A special day for adults, adolescents and kids! Step aboard our charted mini-bus for an excursion guided by DePaul professors that will include visits to the famed Chicago lakefront and a brief look at two vibrant neighborhoods. Bus tours (approximately 2 hours) will depart from DePaul Loop campus at 10 am. Cost is $5 (early bird special good through 6/18/09).  The tour starts at 243 S Wabash Avenue, (DePaul’s Computer and Digital Media building at the northeastern corner of Jackson & Wabash) on the Loop Campus. Join us for a fast-paced “virtual tour” of Burnham and Bennett’s Chicago. We will see flat images from the 1909 Plan of Chicago evolve into fascinating 3-D models and learn how the Virtual Burnham Initiative  is encouraging participants to create structures from the past and develop visions for the future of our region. A visit to the DePaul computer facility to explore the 3-D images will be followed by a reception and brief discussion with the project’s creator, Davis Schneideman, professor at Lake Forest College. Event begins at 25 East Jackson, Room 1308 (DePaul’s Lewis Center at 25 East Jackson Blvd). Free. Space is limited, so please register in advance to Burnham@depaul.edu

  • Morning Tea with the family of Daniel Burnham, Jr.

Join us for a lively group discussion with descendants of Daniel Burnham Jr., son of Daniel Hudson Burnham, who spent his life working to implement ideas in the Plan of Chicago. This free-flowing conversation, moderated by Professor Joe Schwieterman, begins at 10:30am and will conclude by noon. Discussion will be held at the Chaddick Institute, 243 S. Wabash Avenue, Suite 9000 located ion DePaul’s Computer and Digital Media building at the northeastern corner of Jackson & Wabash on the Loop Campus.  Tea and light refreshments will be provided. Lisa Schrenk, a noted scholar, will share fascinating details about the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition, held on the near south side in the vicinity of today’s Museum Campus. We’ll see striking images of the fairground design created by Edward Bennett and exposition buildings designed by the sons of Daniel Hudson Burnham. Guests are invited to an optional one-hour walking tour of the former fairgrounds beginning at 6:45pm. The event will be held at Chaddick Institute 243 S Wabash Ave, Suite 9000 (DePaul’s Computer and Digital Media building at the northeastern corner of Jackson & Wabash) on the Loop Campus. Join us in “Burnham’s neighborhood” for a reception followed by a special viewing of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s newest exhibit, Chicago Model City . Through scale models, photographs, maps, videos and digital visualizations, Chicago Model City investigates planning ideas – and the challenges of their implementation.   • Daniel Burnham and Chicago’s Great Railway Terminals Mini-bus Tour 

Join us for a mini-bus excursion to explore the legacy of of the six great railroad stations that were once vibrant parts of downtown Chicago. We’ll look at some of the remarkable features of each terminal, discuss the efforts made to consolidate them before and after the Plan of Chicago, and the future possibilities for high-speed rail. Historians will greet our group at several historic station sites, including Daniel Burnham’s Union Station. Tour departs from DePaul’s Computer and Digital Media building at the northeastern corner of Jackson & Wabash at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude at 1 p.m. Minimum age is 16, cost is $35. Join us for a fascinating discussion about the spirit of public service evident in the work of Daniel Burnham, Jane Addams and St Vincent DePaul. In our roundtable conversation with DePaul professors Marco Tavanti and Alex Papadopolous and author Jan Metzger, we will explore ethical principles that underscored the work of Burnham, Addams and St Vincent.
