NMS 501 Proseminar This course is an introduction to the intellectual/scholarly field that has come to be called new media studies. In this course we will explore the theoretical traditions of NMS contributing departments and programs. Thus, the course should function as a "gateway" to the rest of the core and your electives. The course will also ask you to begin investigating your professional goals and identifying what you can do in the program, at DePaul, and in Chicago to achieve them. Achieving these goals will depend primarily on your level of engagement with the assigned reading and the degree of time you spend with your own research. Secondary goals should be to become acquainted with the objectives of the scholarly disciplines that contribute to NMS at DePaul, and to gain an introductory awareness of some of the technologies used to create new media.
NMS 502 New Media, Old Media New Media, Old Media offers a critical examination of the rise of the information age and its impact on old media. This course will situate the NMS program in the historical/critical development of mass media and its relationship to power and meaning-making.
NMS 503 Principles of Graphic Design This course introduces students to two-dimensional design—that is, design for flat surfaces such as computer screens and paper. While the course will introduce students to conceptual frameworks for understanding how two-dimensional surfaces engage and motivate readers and viewers, students in this course will spend much of their time engaged in producing examples of two dimensional work and critiquing the work of other students. This course will be a prerequisite for further courses in Web-based and other digital media design.
NMS 504 Text and Image In this course we will explore the increasingly important dynamic between textual information and visual information. In this course we will read about how hypertext has changed the environment and nature of the written word, and we will examine how the Web has "remediated" previous media into a new dynamic. We will use this knowledge to perform analysis of visual and textual artifacts; students may also create their own artifacts.
NMS 505 Workshop/Portfolio Seminar NMS 505 is the “capstone” course in the New Media Studies program. In this class, you will reflect on your coursework and the materials you’ve produced in NMS in order to articulate a coherent professional statement. You will tailor your portfolio to your own intellectual interests and professional goals. This might take the form of an online design portfolio, a printed collection of documents for interviewing, or doctoral program application materials. In this class, you will:
- Reflect on your coursework, trace connections and themes, identify skills, and select representative work
- Identify a career path and industry terminology by researching the job market and study existing portfolios to identify genre conventions and best practices
- Produce professional-quality materials for pursuing employment, professional advancement, or further study
NMS 509 Special Topics in New Media Studies Recent course topics include:
