De Paul University is the largest and one of the most prominent Catholic universities in the United States. Dedicated to the mission of St. Vincent de Paul, the University is known for its teaching excellence, service to the poor, and scholarship that informs teaching and meets human needs. DePaul University was also the first Catholic institution in the nation to offer college courses for nurses in the 1920's.
The nursing department began in 1948 with a baccalaureate completion program for registered nurses.
In 1953 at the request of the National League for Nursing [NLN], we were the first institution in the State of Illinois to establish a graduate program in nursing with specialties in nursing administration and nursing education.
In 2001, we became the first graduate direct entry to nursing program in the state of Illinois. This program is distinctive because of its focus on advanced graduate education for the non-nurse with a college degree.
The nurse anesthesia program offered in collaboration with Evanston-Northwestern Health Care School of Anesthesia, formerly Ravenswood School of Anesthesia, is one of the oldest and most highly regarded in the country.
The nurse practitioner programs joined the family of nursing programs at DePaul in 1996 with specialties in the care of adults, families, women, and children.
Our students comprise a diverse group of adult learners with a variety of first career interests and future goals.
