Department of Physics

About

The Department of Physics at DePaul University provides programs in physics that serve a broad spectrum of student needs. Our undergraduate major offers a curriculum designed to provide the depth and breadth required for graduate study in physics, related and interdisciplinary areas, or for applied programs such as engineering, electronics, and optics.

A major factor in our success in preparing students for advanced degrees and good careers is the high level of cooperation and interaction that we maintain between faculty and students. Our classes are small, often laboratory orientated, therefore promoting serious learning in a friendly atmosphere. Students are encouraged to participate in research with faculty and are frequently co-authors of articles in physics journals. Many students are supported as research assistants by funds from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or by external grants from the National Science Foundation, Research Corporation, or NASA.

Our graduate program offers a terminal masters degree that is designed for industrial scientists or physics teachers interested in obtaining an advanced degree and for students preparing for doctoral work in physics or a related field.

Our full-time faculty of seven have research interests and expertise in the following areas: complex fluids, materials science, ultra-fast physics, cosmology, nuclear physics, observational astronomy, computational physics, and dynamical systems. Students have opportunities to conduct research with our faculty both in excellent facilities within the department and at world class laboratories.  The department has strong connections to Argonne National Laboratory, X-Ray facilities at Northwestern University and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and the Very Large Array Radio Observatory.
