Sociology...
is the study of social interactions and institutions. To study these the department provides both undergraduate and graduate programs that include information (what we know) and theory (how we explain). The curriculum aims to provide students with a basis of understanding and participation in their own communities and allows them to pursue careers in professions related to sociological knowledge and training.
Chicago is a laboratory for research and observation with its ethnic communities, economic development and urban concerns. Students have access to a remarkable range of social service agencies, medical and counseling centers, government organizations, and other institutions. Through community service opportunities, field experience, guest speakers and internships students may establish contact with professionals and augment learning.
After graduation, students who wish to continue their education may enter M.A., Ph.D., and M.S.W. programs; graduate programs in sociology, social work, public policy, communication, and social services; graduate programs in urban planning and analysis; and graduate studies in criminal justice and corrections.
Graduates have a vast number of career options including but not limited to the following: state, county, local governments and private social service agencies, mass media organizations, law enforcement agencies, adult and juvenile parole and probation, corporate, government and university social science research departments, private and public health care organizations, community planning and development organizations, and human services in corporate and government sectors.
