Dr. Einolf received his bachelor’s degree in religion from Davidson College in 1991, a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University in 1994. He worked in the field of refugee resettlement and asylum law from 1994 to 2003, and received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Virginia in 2006.
Dr. Einolf’s research focuses on volunteering and charitable giving. His dissertation, “Pathways to Altruism: A Gender and Life Course Perspective,” won the ARNOVA Gabriel Rudney dissertation award in 2007. Two articles based on his dissertation work are currently in press: “Volunteering, Retirement, and the Baby Boom Generation” in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and “Empathic Concern and Prosocial Behaviors” in Social Science Research.
Dr. Einolf’s second line of research lies with issues of human rights. He is the author of The Mercy Factory: Refugees and the American Asylum System, and “The Fall and Rise of Torture: A Comparative Historical Perspective,” an article published in Sociological Theory in 2007. He has written a historical biography, George Thomas: Virginian for the Union.
Dr. Einolf currently teaches Foundations of Nonprofit Management, and has taught statistics and research methods at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
