Professor Murphy received his doctorate from Stanford University in higher education administration in 1987. He also holds an MA in sociology from Stanford, an MBA from DePaul and a Master of Divinity. He has chaired the School of Public Service since 1994. He founded the William and Mary Pat Hay Vincent de Paul Leadership Project and serves as its Chair.
Currently he teaches management and leadership courses in the School of Public Service and serves as Director.
Prior to his academic appointment he served as Treasurer and Secretary of DePaul University.
Murphy has authored or edited four books, Leadership and Management in Catholic Higher Education in the Americas, 2007, Dinossauros, Gazelas & Tigres Novas Abordagens da Administracao Universitaria (Dinosaurs, Gazelles & Tigers, New Approaches to Managing Higher Education, a Brazil-US Dialog, (both in Portuguese) with Victor Meyer, Jr), Visions and Values in Catholic Higher Education, and College Leadership: Sharing the Vision. He has also published several articles including “Leaders are Teachers,” “We Want the Best,” “Servant Leadership in the Manner of Vincent de Paul,” "Taking the Measure of Leadership Impact: How Leaders Share Values in Catholic Higher Education," and "Shakes, Rattles and Rolls: How Leaders Share Visions."
Professor Murphy has lectured or taught in Brazil, India, Ireland, France, the Philippines, Taiwan and Kenya. His next international teaching destination is Zagreb, Croatia.
He also served as dean of students and instructor in St. Vincent de Paul High School, Lemont, Illinois.
He is a member of the Congregation of the Mission, founded by St. Vincent de Paul, and sponsors of DePaul University.
