Panelists:
As a solo artist and member of Las Mujeres Muralistas, an influential San Francisco Mission district Latina women's mural group in the early seventies, Ester Hernandez's career has marked her as a pioneer in the Chicana/Chicano civil rights art movement. Her work reflects the political, social, ecological, and spiritual themes born from community pride, a commitment to political action, and an abiding sense of humor. She will visit DePaul to talk about her work during her trip to Chicago for the opening of Rastros y Cronicas at the National Museum of Mexican Art.
The NMMA is organizing an exhibition that will educate the public about the femicide plaguing Juarez and the larger social, economic, and political issues that have allowed this level of violence to continue with impunity. The exhibition will include diverse art media such as: painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation, serigraphy, video, and didactics to immerse visitors in the lives of the victims. The exhibition program will also include a public symposium in collaboration with The Women's Center at DePaul University, domestic violence and sexual assault programs led by Mujeres Latinas en Accion, and teen programs at both Radio Art and Yollocalli Arts Reach.
The intent of Rastros y Cronicas is to educate the public and provide a holistic picture about the women of Juarez who have lost their lives and those who continue to live in hostile and vulnerable conditions. The NMMA is working with over 20 women artists from both sides of the border, including: Fabianna Rodriguez, Yreina Cervantes, Judithe Hernandez, Celia Alvarez, Delilah Montoya, Kathy Vargas, Carmen Bordes, Rocio Maldonado, and Paula Santiago.
