Minor in Professional Writing

Planning a career? What's writing got to do with it? Did you know that according to the College Board (2004) eighty percent or more of the companies in the service and finance, insurance, and real state sectors assess writing during hiring? Or that half of all companies take writing into account when making promotion decisions? Prepare now for the job market with WRD's Professional Writing minor, a complement to any major. Program Requirements

The Minor in Professional Writing requires six courses. Two courses are required:

  • WRD 206: Introduction to Professional Writing
  • WRD 301: Writing in Workplace Settings*

The other four courses must be chosen from the following:

  • WRD 203: Grammar and Style for Writers
  • WRD 204: Technical Writing
  • WRD 208: Introduction to Reasoned Discourse
  • WRD 300: Composition and Style
  • WRD 303: Semiotics
  • WRD 306: Rhetoric
  • WRD 309: Topics in Writing (when the topic is appropriate)
  • WRD 376: Stylistics
  • WRD 377: Writing and Social Engagement
  • WRD 378: Teaching English as a Second Language in Chicago
  • WRD 395: Writing Center Theory and Pedagogy
  • WRD 396: Writing Fellows Theory and Practice
  • WRD 398: Internship
  • WRD 399: Independent Study (4 hrs. maximum credit)

*Prior to Autumn Quarter 2009, Writing in Workplace Settings was titled Writing in the Professions.  WRD 301 may be taken only once for credit regardless of title.
