French American Chamber of Commerce

Offers an international career development program with internships for Americans in French companies. The FACC training program for Americans in France connects qualified young Americans aspiring to work in France with companies interested in hosting them for up to 18 months. Through a partnership with the French Government agency Office des Migrations Internationales, the FACC’s International Career Development Programs sponsor training visas for American students and recent graduates to work in France. Work is paid at least €1,300/month (French minimum wage).

Global China Connection

GCC's unique Chinese Language and Internship Program combines Chinese language studies with practical work experience in an international corporation or domestic company operating in China. This program is ideal for graduate students or professionals interested in improving their Chinese language skills and gaining work experience in China. Associazione Culturale Linguistica Educational (A.C.L.E.)
Opportunity for native English speakers to spend a summer as a camp counselor in Italy. Summer camp program is geared toward teaching English through a variety of songs, games, and drama productions. Counselors earn 245 euro a week or 225 euro a week  if they teach in a city.  Program fee covers room and board (homestay, flat, or hotel), travel between camps, and on-the-job insurance. Those with acting skills can apply to work for 5 months with the Theatrino program, which tours Italian schools to present interactive shows and workshops in English. Pay is 250 euro a week with accommodations and transport provided.

The Met internship
A nine-week summer internship for college students that focuses on conducting gallery workshops for children about medieval art. Interns work full-time, five days a week for a stipend of $2,925.

Newberry Library/École Nationale des Chartes Exchange Fellowship 

This fellowship provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American or Canadian graduate student to study at the École Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of three months. The École des Chartes is the oldest institution in Europe specializing in the archival sciences, including paleography, bibliography, textual editing, and the history of the book. Applications are especially encouraged from students who are in the early stages of preparing their dissertations. In your project abstract and project description, provide specifics about your need for the training available at the École Nationale des Chartes and how it will contribute to your dissertation or future projects.

Pasteur Foundation

Students interested in biomedical research can spend a summer interning at the Institut Pasteur in Paris to get international lab experience. Interns will receive a living allowance of $400 per week for a maximum of $4,000. Travel and housing is not covered by this program, but a $500 subsidy is provided and intended to defray costs of travel and requisite insurance. French knowledge is a plus, but not required.

Teach for China

This innovative nonprofit organization takes a unique approach to eliminating educational inequity in China by enlisting the US and China's most promising future leaders in the effort. Placed in four-person, cross-cultural teams (2 Americans + 2 Chinese) at their host schools, TFC's Fellows share profound, enduring experiences that will shape the long-term trajectory of US-China relations, and ultimately produce shared solutions to as yet unsolved problems. Fellows receive 6 weeks of intensive training and Chinese language instruction before they begin teaching in local schools throughout China.

Temple University, Japan

The Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies (ICAS) internship program provides opportunities for the interns to work as research associates with faculty members, help organize conferences, or work on special projects with TUJ administrators. Through TUJ’s Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies, interns have worked on organizing major academic symposia, assisted faculty in their work (in art history, nation-branding, and Chinese immigration), and co-written articles.

U.S. Department of Education

City of Chicago

In addition to individual internship opportunities, DHR has developed a new and innovative Student Intern Pool. This new process allows students interested in gaining valuable municipal government experience to submit their profile which is kept in a pool of pre-qualified candidates for consideration for available positions.

Chicago Council on Global Affairs

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs offers undergraduate juniors and seniors as well as graduate students the chance to learn about our organization and participate in a variety of duties associated with ongoing projects through internships. While intern responsibilities vary by department, tasks may include researching prospective speakers, donors, studies, and corporate members, writing communications, assisting in the development of marketing/program materials, audience and outreach development, administrative duties (filing, faxing, data entry, preparing mailings, assembling program/meeting materials), assisting at Council events, and other projects as assigned.

Embassy of France in the U.S.

Only American candidates, or those candidates studying within an American institution, can apply directly to the embassy for an intern position. The procedure for French citizens is different (please see below). The Office of Press and Communication accepts interns adherent to the fall, spring and summer semester schedule. Interns must be currently enrolled, full-time students in an American university to be considered. A proficiency in French and native speaking level in English is required. There is a specific application process candidates much undergo to be considered. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

The Student Volunteer Employment Program hires students to work at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as volunteers (in an unpaid capacity) for valuable work experience directly related to their academic field of study. Students may receive educational credit for their internship!

Federal Government

Under President Obama’s leadership, the Federal Government has taken steps to help students and recent graduates join the Federal service. New opportunities will appear on USAJOBS as agencies post them.

Illinois Governor

The Governor’s Office of Constituent Affairs Internship and Fellowship programs offer students and recent college graduates the opportunity to explore their own unique interests within state government. Program participants will connect constituents to crucial state services and promote civic engagement across Illinois while developing an expertise of state government programs and functions.

Interpol

Interns will be based at INTERPOL's General Secretariat in Lyon, France, or at one of the Regional Bureaus. It is an opportunity to gain an insight into how an international organization operates and to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment. As well as learning about the functioning of international police co-operation, interns will be able to enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments, thereby developing skills which will be useful in future employment.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Italy

The programme is offered by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its diplomatic mission in the accredited country of the applicants, to foreign citizens or Italian resident abroad (IRE), living and residing in selected countries wishing to study at Italian public universities or other public institutions of higher education. Bursaries will be awarded with a priority to students who shall demonstrate through the excellence of their curriculum the ability to complete with profit their studies in Italian public study institutions.

The Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences supports research that develops and advances scientific knowledge about the brain, human cognition, language, social behavior, and culture including research on the interactions between human societies and their environments. Secretary’s Honors Program Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative  The Secretary’s Honors Program (SHP) Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative is an unpaid student volunteer program for college students pursuing a program of study in a cybersecurity-related field. Originally created in April 2013, the program expanded to new DHS offices and locations in 2014, with over 100 unpaid student volunteer assignments available in over 60 locations across the country. Participating offices and Components in the program include U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations computer forensics labs, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the DHS Office of the Chief Information Officer, and state and major urban area fusion centers. Student volunteers in the program gain invaluable hands-on experience and exposure to the work done by DHS cybersecurity professionals, and perform a broad range of duties in support of DHS’ cybersecurity mission.

American Foreign Service Association

The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) offers internships in the areas listed on the right hand side. Each internship is offered three times a year - for the spring, summer and fall semesters. Please see each individual description for deadlines and requirements.

American Friends Service Committee

Internship positions are available in each of our Chicago programs. Interns will work with a challenging and diverse staff, with opportunities to attend planned activities, as well as work on a long-term project. Duration and project focus are negotiated. Small stipends are available for some of the internships; others are on a work-study or volunteer basis.

American Red Cross – Chicago

As reflected in the Red Cross mission, the Chicago Region seeks to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to natural and human-caused disasters through the immediate mobilization of people and resources and the provision of community, workplace, and school-based training. All internships are unpaid and require a 300 hour commitment. Students that are not receiving academic credit are eligible for a $500 travel reimbursement upon completion of the 300 hour requirement. To be considered for an internship you must complete an application on our Volunteer Connection System.

Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) - Jordan

Intern responsibilities during this 5-6 month internship include: making and maintaining relationships with other organizations and individuals, completing funding applications for ACHRS programs, organizing conferences and seminars for the center, recruiting new interns, and updating the English language web site.  The position is unpaid, but interns are provided with housing for the duration of the internship.

Arab West Foundation – Egypt

The Arab West Foundation publishes an e-magazine, Arab West Report, which includes special reports and summary translations of the Egyptian press.  Interns live in Cairo, and there are a variety of opportunities such as web editor, e-marketing coordinator, and Arabic-English translation assistant.  Internships are unpaid, but CIDT can assist with requesting funding and finding housing.

Better Government Association

The Better Government Association (BGA) seeks an intern to work in public relations and communications.  We are looking for a bright, ambitious intern who is in college or graduate school. The ideal candidate should be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, excel is a plus. Daily activities would include maintaining media logs, assisting staff with internal and external communications and event planning. A major and/or interest in communications/journalism and government is preferred.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Middle East Studies Program

Junior Fellows provide research assistance to Associates on various projects.  Responsibilities may include: researching for books, co-authoring journal articles and policy papers, participating in meetings, contributing to congressional testimony and organizing briefings. Only graduating seniors and those who have graduated within the last year are eligible to apply; not open to graduate students. The one year fellowship includes a $35,000 salary and full benefits. Participants must be nominated by their institution. Out of around 400 applicants, only 8-10 fellows are selected.

Casa de los Amigos

Casa de los Amigos is a Quaker-run organization that supports various community services in Mexico City. Full-time volunteers receive free room and board at the Casa de los Amigos residence, although their work is unpaid. Full-time volunteers help run the Hospitality Program (including the guest house, maintaining community spaces, and planning and running events), work with one of the Peace Programs, participate in Casa life, and share in the many other tasks and projects needed to keep the house and community healthy, safe, and vibrant. Volunteers must commit to 6 months to 1 year of service and must be fluent in Spanish.

Spannocchia Foundation

The internship program is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people by providing them with a unique educational experience on a community oriented organic farm in Tuscany, Italy. Tenuta di Spannocchia’s 1100-acre pastoral estate serves as an active model for responsible stewardship through collective effort. The Spannocchia Foundation supports a unique pair of programs at the Castello di Spannocchia: the Farm and Guest Services Internship Programs. Both programs have three sessions per year and are run together on the same three-month schedule.

Are you looking for a way to get hands-on experience working at a non-profit? You can learn what it's like to work as a case manager at a refugee resettlement agency, teach alongside our talented ESL instructors, assist our immigration legal team, or put your administrative skills to work! Through an internship at World Relief Chicago, you will also learn strategies to equip the local Church to minister to refugees & immigrants in your community.
