Program Change FAQ
May I change my program?
Yes, but with accountability. When you are admitted to the program, it is understood that you will choose the twelve or thirteen courses you actually take from among the list of 16 to 20 courses you submitted as part of your application. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences allows the freedom of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program on the condition that students maintain coherence and focus in their programs. Therefore, if you choose courses not originally proposed, you will need to account for the change.
If you take no more than two courses not originally proposed but still in a department or field you originally proposed, you simply need to send the Director an email describing the change, and to submit a new List of Courses to the Drop Box on the MALS and IDS D2L site. Please use the standard IDS List of Courses Guide Form.
If you take more than two courses not originally proposed (but in an originally proposed department), or any courses in a department not originally proposed, you will need to submit a revised Statement of Academic Purpose and a new List of Courses. These need to be approved before you can continue. Copies of memos and revised SAP/LOC’s will be kept in your file in the MALS/IDS Program Office.
When you are preparing to graduate the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will ask the IDS program to compare your proposed List of Courses with the courses you actually took. If there are significant differences between the two lists, questions will be raised about the integrity of your program. Therefore it is wise to keep current with your documentation explaining your choice of courses.
