Refugee and Forced Migration Studies Graduate Certificate Online (16 credit hours/4 courses)

Please see: Refugee and Forced Migration Studies Graduate Certificate Online < DePaul University

This certificate allows students to complete an online certificate in RFMS without seeking a full degree. Local students have the option of attending required in-person classes. Foreign students can participate in these classes without entailing the risks of moving abroad. The certificate is an additional professional credential that students can gain when they cannot otherwise move to the Chicago area and/or do not have the time or funds to pursue a full masters in the Chicago area. The credential signals to current or prospective employers that these students have sought additional knowledge and research in migration policies and political issues.

Chicago and the State of Illinois are sites of groundbreaking legislation and norms for forced migrants. They have set the national standard for refugee resettlement and various forms of support for undocumented residents. Chicago is considered one of the most important cities in this country for civil society (i.e. NGO) institutions supporting migrants in a variety of ways. DePaul's mission attracts a number of students who are passionate about social justice. The RFMS program remains one of the only programs in the nation with the advantage of having existed for longer than other programs. With smaller classes, a cohort model, and excellent alumni relations for internships and jobs, our program offers a unique academic experience.

When out-of-state, foreign, or local individuals choose to participate in our certificate, they will gain formal, in-depth knowledge of forced migration and refugees that they could not otherwise. Required courses:

  •    FMS 402 Proseminar in Refugee and Forced Displacement issues
  •    FMS 404 International Conflict Management
  •    FMS 405 Public Health and Forced Migration
  •    either FMS 419 Humanitarian Logistics or FMS 418 Refugee Trauma and Mental Health

Please submit undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate transcripts (a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale is recommended but not required for admission); and a personal statement of 300-500 words (describing your interest in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, any prior experience in the field, and personal or professional goals for pursuing the certificate), and a writing sample (academic writing of approximately 2,000 words) to: Admission and Aid | DePaul University | DePaul University, Chicago
