Black history is about the lived experiences of families and communities. Professor Alkalimat explores Black history from the perspective of everyday people such as his own ancestor, Free Frank McWorter, a freed slave who founded the town of New Philadelphia, an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Alkalimat will present cases that deal with Chicago and his family to explore the relationship between communal social experiences and individual self-realization.
