Throughout the year, students in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences have the opportunity to present at various conferences and exhibitions organized by their departments.
Conferences
History
The Annual Student History Conference is held each year during the spring quarter. Undergraduate and graduate students present original historical research conducted within in any DePaul class.
History of Art and Architecture
The History of Art and Architecture department sponsors an annual Student Symposium and Essay Prize, which brings greater visibility to research conducted by our students and deepens the sense of community between students, faculty, and friends of the department. The symposium consists of four parts, a plenary lecture by a senior scholar in art history, student paper presentations, the awarding of the essay prize, and a celebratory reception
Honors Student Conference: Spotlight on Research and Creativity
The DePaul University Honors Program sponsors an annual “Honors Student Conference: Spotlight on Research and Creativity” each spring. The conference, which will take place this year on May 13, 2016 from 3 pm to 6 pm in the Student Center, will celebrate the work of more than sixty honors students, including the presentation of 35-40 senior thesis projects. This event features multimedia presentations and posters summarizing research and creative projects produced by honors students during the three preceding quarters. International Studies Annual Student Conference
Sociology
The Department of Sociology hosts the annual Sharing Social Knowledge Conference for undergraduate students who have completed their own scholarly or creative project with a faculty member or from a sociology course. The Sharing Social Knowledge conference is an opportunity to showcase the hard work of our students, to give them a forum in which to share what they have learned in conducting their own research, and to provide the wider community a chance to learn something new about the society we live in, whether that be the DePaul community, Chicago more generally, the United States, or globally.”
The Center for World Catholicism & Intercultural Theology
The Center for World Catholicism & Intercultural Theology sponsors a World Catholicism Research Poster Presentation in April in conjunction with the opening day of the World Catholicism Week conference. Interactive sessions celebrate the original research of select students from Winter Quarter Catholic Studies courses on the annual World Catholicism Week conference topic. Conference speakers are present to offer their response and comments on the students’ work.
Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse
Hosted by the Department of WRD and WRD’s MA programs in New Media Studies and Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse, Spread the WoRD is a one-day student conference at which graduate students, WRD majors, and Professional Writing minors share and discuss their work with students and faculty. This year’s conference is on Saturday, May 14, on DePaul University’s Lincoln Park Campus.
Exhibitions
The Senior Capstone Exhibition is a juried exhibition featuring the work of Art, Media, & Design seniors enrolled in Art, Media, & Design Vincent de Paul Professor Laura Kina’s ART 392 Senior Studio Capstone Seminar. This course gives students the time, space, critical perspective and conceptual framework to create a unified body of artwork, in which they can reflect on a specific topic of their choice. As a senior capstone course in liberal arts for Art, Media, & Design majors it has the purpose of helping students reflect on their liberal arts education at DePaul while beginning to position themselves as contributors to the field of visual arts upon graduation.
