Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is the foundational college of DePaul. We serve the entire university through our courses in the Liberal Studies and University Honors programs (our names for “general education”) and robust co-curricular educational opportunities. We are devoted to the life of the mind as well as the Vincentian missions of service to the community and social justice.
The success of the college is due to our devoted faculty and staff who share the university's values, vision, and enthusiasm for learning. Teaching comes first at DePaul. All of our classes are taught by faculty members, not graduate assistants. Our faculty shape their fields of expertise and apply the latest knowledge and methods in their classrooms and scholarly and creative work.
We provide all of our students with education that balances in-depth study with a breadth of experience in the various disciplines that form the core of human knowledge. All of our degree-granting programs seek to enhance student knowledge and critical thinking skills, to raise questions of value and meaning, and to develop those habits of the heart and mind intrinsic to lifelong and independent learning. Our alumni form a vast and impressive network of professionals, many of whom continue to support the college in various ways, not least of which is mentoring current students.
We teach classes and present events on both of DePaul’s main campuses -- in the residential and commercial neighborhood of Lincoln Park, and in the center of downtown, the Loop. We are especially proud of Arts and Letters Hall, a certified “green” building that opened recently in Lincoln Park, which students love for its welcoming architecture and spaces for studying and socializing.
I hope you have the opportunity to get to know us better by way of a campus visit, by partaking in an event on campus, or by contacting us for more information. We look forward to getting to know you, too.
