Building Modern Streetcar Systems: Is the Goal to Promote "Livability" or Improve Transportation? A Look at the Evidence, Guest Speaker Lauren Fischer
Across the U.S., modern streetcar systems are being promoted to both create high density and pedestrian-friendly corridors and improve mobility. Yet critics argue that these projects tend to prioritize economic development and "livability" over traditional transportation goals, such as reducing driving and travel. But what does the evidence show? Lauren Fischer will explore the financial and evaluation techniques being applied to streetcar projects across the country. Her presentation will ask: what are the unintended consequences of emphasizing livability rather than transportation? How has federal policy affected incentives to build new lines? Along the way she'll look at some of the streetcar proposals emerging for Chicago and elsewhere. This will be a discussion orientated events, with extensive time for Q&A. Chaddick Institute, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Suite 9000. Light refreshments provided. RSVP to chaddick@depaul.edu.
