HumanitiesX offers year-long fellowships to teams comprised of faculty in DePaul’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, community partners, and students. Each team works to design and deploy a co-taught, project-based course in the humanities in the spring of the fellowship year. These courses all focus on a shared annual theme.

HumanitiesX fellows participate in professional development activities together, exchange knowledge about the annual theme, and collaboratively develop meaningful, community-engaged course projects. These projects are key to the HumanitiesX model, as they demonstrate how humanities methods—such as historical inquiry, critique, preservation, curation, storytelling, writing, and artistic expression—can contribute to understanding and action beyond the classroom.

HumanitiesX is generously funded by a four-year grant from The Mellon Foundation. In the fall of 2021, we officially launched the HumanitiesX collaborative with our first cohort, guided by our inaugural theme: Immigration and Migration. In 2022-23, we welcomed our second cohort on the theme of The Environment: Crisis and Action and our third cohort, on the theme of Democracy & Rights, is now at work!
