The Military Science curriculum is divided into two parts: basic and advanced. The basic course normally encompasses the freshman and sophomore academic years. Basic-course students are under no obligation to enter into a contractual agreement with the U.S. Government.
The Basic Course takes place during your first two years in college as elective courses. It normally involves one elective class and lab each semester along with the requisite physical training and field training exercises. You will learn basic military skills, the fundamentals of leadership and start the groundwork toward becoming an Army leader.
Basic course:
Freshman Year: MSC 111, 112 and 113, and MSC 151-53 (Physical Readiness).
Sophomore Year: MSC 211, 212 and 213, and MSC 252-54 (Physical Readiness)
Or fulfill the Basic Course requirements by:
- Attend Leaders Training Course between your sophomore/junior summer
- Have performed prior service in the U.S. Military
- Be a current Army Reservist/Guardsman who has completed Basic Training
The advanced course encompasses juniors and seniors who have successfully completed the on-campus basic course. Students who have attended a special six-week summer training program, students who have previous Junior ROTC training, and qualified veterans may also be admitted into the advanced course. Upon enrollment in the advanced course, the student enters into a contractual agreement with the United States Government, whereby the student agrees to accept a commission in
the United States Army for a period of active or reserve duty after his graduation. The government, in return, provides a monthly stipend of $300-500 for up to ten months of the school year.
Advance course students can expect to participate in weekly physical fitness training and periodic weekend field training events each quarter. Students must successfully complete a paid six-week Leader Development Advance Course (LDAC) prior to being commissioned. Generally, students complete LDAC during the summer between their junior and senior years.
Advanced Course:
Junior Year: MSC 321, 322, 323, and MSC 351-53 (Physical Readiness)
Senior Year: MSC 341, 342, 343, and MSC 353-55 (Physical Readiness)
Credits earned through the Military Science department are counted toward degree requirements at DePaul. Classroom instruction is offered at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, Robert Morris College, Chicago State, DePaul and Loyola University.
