Immerse yourself in the cultural and linguistic riches of China

Dive into the history, literature, language and culture of China—and prepare yourself to engage with Chinese-speaking communities in Chicago and around the globe. DePaul’s flexible MA in Chinese provides a customizable curriculum to help you develop advanced linguistic and cultural expertise.

The program may be completed in two years. Core courses are offered in the evenings, while most elective courses are offered in the afternoon/evening.

Use your language skills citywide

As an MA in Chinese student, you’ll complete a service-learning requirement at one of Chicago’s cultural organizations, like the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago or the Chinese Fine Arts Society.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, though we encourage applicants to submit materials at least two months prior to the quarter in which you wish to enroll.

Admission Requirements

Submit an online application, language proficiency test scores, letters of recommendation, letters of application, and complete an interview with a faculty member in our Chinese program.

Faculty with a multitude of interests

Study with Associate Professor Li Jin, who examines the ways language learners acquire Chinese in study abroad contexts. Faculty of the MA in Chinese have taught at institutions in China, Canada and the U.S. and foster a diverse array of research interests, including technology-enhanced second-language teaching, Chinese pop culture and social media, Chinese cinema and literature, and more.
